INTERNET-ENGLISH-TRAVEL = we are so damn lucky

Guys! we are so damn lucky!
If you have a roof above your head, food everyday, clean water and some money in your pocket, you already have to consider yourself pretty lucky.
Even more if you are part of the young generation and you have access to the Internet.

That is what I am talking about:

We have some very powerful tools in our hands
and we should not take them for granted!
Those super tools are:
Internet, English and the possibility to move in the world more easier than before.

It has never been so easy like nowadays to move in the World and to communicate with other people.
The young generation has this great luck and chance at its disposal. 
The main reasons are, in my opinion, Internet, the globalization, Europe (in my case), and English as a common language.
I was born in 1990. We have been part of the first "Erasmus Programme generation", moving abroad to study, getting in touch with other young people from different coutries, expanding our horizons and possibilities, which means also being in contact with other cultures.

I'll go a litte into details of these three blessings we have, before telling you my final conclusion:

INTERNET
In Internet there is everything.
It's a huge source of learning: you can learn pretty much everything through Internet, find things and people, answer questions, get in touch with persons on the other side of the globe. It's a pretty free platform for self marketing and publicity too. It's a way to communicate with a very large number of people and it is potentially possible to reach a super wide audience.
Attention: as many good things, it has a darkside: Internet can be a supertool if you can use it correctly. But if you end up procrastinating on Youtube watching kitties or if you don't pay attention at the sources of information, it can become of course a big limit for your personal growth :P

ENGLISHit's our common language, makes everything easier and also the "strangers" more close to us. Always remember that communication is the base!
Generally speaking, we are scared from things we don't know and don't understand. A common language is therefore a first step against xenophobia and towards a feeling of a bigger community.

MOVE
Nowadays it is cheaper to travel, easier to book a plane ticket (or bus! or high speed train! or car sharing!) and go somewhere far away from our hometown. Just think about it and realize how difficult and rare it was for our grandparents to move!
In Europe it is even easier, because we don't need any visa to cross the borders and we have the same currency!

Many times, while travelling abroad and meeting other boys and girls like me, I felt a sense of belonging to the same huge young generation of globalization.
When I was in Toronto I felt this even more. Toronto is the most multicultural city in the World! Everyone you meet there is actually from Toronto, but everyone with his own personal and different backgroud.

Many times it felt weird to ask people: “Where are you from?” It's sometimes nonsense and not enough anymore. A good question could be: “What's your background?” or “Where are you local?” (as a very interesting Ted talk by Taiye Selasi suggested).

CONCLUSION
SO this post is basically to remind myself and everyone else
that we are so lucky, we should not take all this for granted, but we should think about how we can use this in the best constructive way.


 
(Note, I am European and I talk especially about Europe, because that is my personal experience. But if there is some reader out there from other part of our planet, I would be glad to hear their opinion about this).

(even if you are Italian.... why don't make an effort and just practice your English? :P)

Spesso mi fermo a pensare che la mia generazione è molto fortunata, si trova in un momento interessante e vive in un'epoca meravigliosa: abbiamo una potenzialità immesa e di questo oggi voglio parlare.

Siamo d'accordo che ci troviamo nella fetta fortunata del pianeta, anche solo perché abbiamo cibo tutti i giorni, acqua pulita e un tetto sopra la testa.
Oggi qui vi voglio dire perché secondo me siamo ancora più fortunati, specialmente se facciamo parte della generazione giovane (diciamo under trenta, dai!)

Sto parlando in particolare di tre super poteri che abbiamo oggigiorno: Internet, la lingua inglese come idioma comune e la possibilità di viaggiare più facilmente di prima.

Non è mai stato facile come oggi muoversi e comunicare.
Specialmente le giovani generazioni hanno in mano queste grandi chances e opportunità.
I principali punti su cui mi voglio concentrare sono internet, la globalizzazione, l'Europa e l'inglese.

La mia generazione è stata una delle prime generazioni Erasmus e ha avuto la grande fortuna di trascorrere un periodo più o meno lungo all'estero, conoscere altri giovani di altre nazioni, espandere i propri orizzonti e le proprie possibilità e entrare un contatto diretto con altre culture.
Entro nel dettaglio dei singoli punti e poi vi esongo la mia conclusione:


Considerate i seguenti punti: - siamo stati la prima generazione Erasmus
- costi viaggi proporzionalmente più affordabili
- lingua comune inglese
- internet, comunicazione senza limiti!
INTERNET
In internet c'è tutto. Internet è un'immensa fonte di apprendimento, se si sa dove cercare. Con questo potente mezzo, che oggi abbiamo praticamente tutti e praticamente a costo zero, possiamo imparare qualsiasi cosa, trovare cose e persone, trovare risposte, essere in contatto con persone dall'altro lato del globo. E' addirittura possibile usarlo come piattaforma per auto pubblicizzarsi. Si può comunicare con una fetta molto grande di persone ed è potenzialmente possibile raggiungere un grande numero di utenti.
Attenzione però: come ogni buona cosa, ha un lato oscuro. Infatti Internet è un super aggeggio se lo si sa usare correttamente. Per fare questo bisogna per esempio controllare le fonti che si usano e non procrastinare in mille modi su Youtube o altrove.

Muoversi/viaggiare
Ormai viaggiare costa relativamente poco, soprattutto se paragonato all'epoca dei nostri nonni. E' assai più facile prenotare un volo, un pullman, un treno o anche un passaggio in macchina (car-pooling o sharing).
In Europa è ancora più facile e dobbiamo renderci conto della fortuna che abbiamo di poter attraversare i confini senza nemmeno accorgercene, senza bisogno di visti, permessi o di cambiare moneta!

Molte volte, viaggiando all'estero e incontrando altri ragazzi e ragazze come me, ho sentito un senso di appartenenza a questa grande generazione della globalizzazione. E' una sensazione estremamente bella, che mi dà un sacco di speranza nel futuro.
Quando mi trovavo a Toronto ho sentito qualcosa di molto simile.
Toronto è la città più multiculturale al mondo! Ogni persona che incontravo era effettivamente di Toronto, ma ognuno aveva un personale e diverso background.
Molte volte sembrava strano chiedere "Where are you from?" e in effetti talvolta è una domanda senza senso oppure non è abbastanza. E' proprio in quella metropoli che ho imparato invece a chiedere "What's your background?", che trovo una domanda geniale.

CONCLUSIONI
Questo post di oggi serve essenzialmente come reminder per me, ma anche per tutti voi, per ricordare quanto siamo fortunati e anche che non dobbiamo dare tutto questo per scontato, ma anzi trovare il miglior modo per sfruttare questa condizione in un modo costruttivo.

 

(Nota finale, anche se mi pare ovvia. In quanto italiana e europea, io parlo della mia esperienza in questo continente e nella mia fortunata condizione. Parlo della mia esperienza personale, ma so bene che altrove questa stessa generazione può viverla diversamente. Sarebbe anzi interessante sentire il parere di qualcun altro che si trova per esempio in un altro continente o emisfero).
